Challenge NZ one year on - Nevil reflects
An editorial comment from the business owner encourages quiet reflection on what we have achieved and where we are going next.
Challenge NZ was established over a year ago, with the member companies being
There are three major areas of focus at Challenge NZ:
- To provide governance, management, strategic planning, marketing and project management to the companies in the group.
- To consider future acquisitions and start-ups of selected businesses that fit our future strategic growth plan.
- To develop research and development across our group. Our long term goal is to have a dedicated R&D team that can link science and technology with engineering.
World events over the last year have reinforced my belief in the central elements that prompted the establishment of Challenge NZ.
Green as business reality
I believe we are in one of the greatest times of change the modern world has seen. The global recession has catalysed business owners to review all aspects of their operations. The smart ones will emerge and go forward in a much more 'green' way. Green and eco are not just feel-good words any longer, they are a business reality.
Awareness is rising that world resources are limited, our impact on the planet is huge, and every one of us must make changes to support the environment. It's easy enough at home - many people are recycling - but what about our work? What about industry?
The new direction for our business links science and technology, environmentally sustainable practices, and engineered solutions.
Commodities such as water and algae are increasingly valuable. New Zealand has distinct advantages in these areas, but we must take a long term, proactive view to maximise their development. Challenge NZ is positioning itself to be one of the leaders in this new direction.
Nelson's advantages
Nelson is well situated to take a positive approach in the marine engineering environment. Our port is sheltered, the port precinct compact and well-serviced. Our weather is moderate and our local community is friendly to the port. We have a highly skilled marine workforce, well established businesses, and good networks within a community still small enough to be passionate about their work.
Thanks to my partners, Richard McBride of McBride Design, and Gary Allen of Fluid Power Solutions Ltd, for having the confidence to support Challenge NZ and share in developing the vision, also my managers Robert Hutton (FPS) and Andrew Gray (Reliance).
In summary, I believe our business world has changed. My vision for Challenge NZ is to blend the skills and capacity of all the businesses within our group, taking a strategic, and environmentally friendly approach. Together, we can sell our services on a nation-wide, pacific-wide, even a world-wide basis.
We have a new vision and culture, new direction, and exciting times ahead.
