Challenge NZ Projects

In early November Challenge Marine launched the Pheonix, a 22m aluminium mussel farm service vessel. She is destined for work in the Coromandel, seeding the mussel lines and working in general mussel farm maintenance. Designed by Richard McBride, the Phoenix bears some similarities to the 29m mussel harvester, Northern Quest, build by Challenge Marine in 2008.

These photos were taken 4 November as she was loaded for transport to Port Nelson for launching.

FPS Ltd have also been working on the Phoenix. Just as they did for the Northern Quest, FPS have installed all the hydraulic gear - steering, deck and anchor winches, deck machinery and cranes, and all the plumbing work. Another current project at FPS Ltd is the build of hydraulic power units for another local engineering company, who in turn are exporting them to Australia.

October 2009: Reliance Engineering have been working on a piping system for a coal mine at Stockton on the West Coast. The plan called for a complex of pipes, made in carbon steel, with precisely defined bends, angles and vents, to be used to wash and shift coal in a slurry form.
